Dr. Bontis is Director of the Institute for Intellectual Capital Research, a leading strategic management consulting firm and research think-tank that specializes in conducting knowledge management audits, intellectual capital valuations and organizational learning assessments for corporate and government clients. He is also an award-winning professor of strategic management at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and is rated as one of McMaster s most popular professors by Maclean s magazine for the fourth year in a row. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Intellectual Capital which is the leading academic publication in the field. In addition, Dr. Bontis is Chief Knowledge Officer of Knexa Solutions the world's first knowledge exchange and auction. Tom Stewart, member of the Board of Editors of FORTUNE magazine and the editor of Harvard Business Review, recognizes him as a pioneer and one of the world s real intellectual capital experts. Dr. Bontis completed his doctoral education at the Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario and is recognized as one of the first to complete his dissertation on the integration of intellectual capital, organizational learning and knowledge management. His present consulting work and research interests include diagnosing knowledge stocks and flows in organizations and their impact on organizational performance.
Professor Bontis has won international acclaim for his academic research papers, books and business management cases. His most recent publications appear in the Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Knowledge Management, Quarterly Journal of Electronic Commerce, Knowledge and Process Management, Journal of Human Resource Costing and Accounting, Journal of Internet Research, International Journal of Innovation and Learning, Leadership & Organizational Development Journal, International Journal of Technology Management, European Management Journal, International Journal of Management Reviews, Management Decision, Business Quarterly, and Knowledge Inc. He has recently completed two new books published by Butterworth Heinemann and Oxford University Press. He is an internationally sought after keynote speaker and has presented at hundreds of conferences, corporate presentations, seminars and workshops. Dr. Bontis is also on the Board of Directors for KMCI.org (Knowledge Management Consortium International). He is on the Advisory Board of several organizations including BRASSRING (a web-based hiring solutions provider), SMARTSHADOW (a software optimizer of corporate information flow), CHRONICLE TECHNOLOGIES (a knowledge linking and mapping company), GREENLIGHT (an HR advisory services provider), AREOPA (an international consulting network) and a variety of educational-based institutions designing and implementing KM programs. He recently launched Canada s first nation-wide KM certification program.
Upon graduating from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor s Degree in Honors Business Administration (HBA), Nick Bontis received the University s top scholastic achievement award. He subsequently completed both the Open Information Systems Executive Program taught by the Cambridge Technology Group and Level 1 of the Certified Financial Analyst program sponsored by the Association for Investment Management Research. Dr. Bontis brings several years of related work experience with him. In addition to his current academic and consulting pursuits, he worked at Human Resources Development Canada prior to working as an accountant for KPMG. Before his return to academia, Dr. Bontis worked for several years at CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) Securities Inc. in a variety of areas including marketing, securities analysis, recruitment, strategy and software development. He received the CIBC Chairman s Award for outstanding contribution to the organization. Nick enjoyed many years as a leading member of both the UWO Varsity Men's Soccer (Canadian All-Star) and Track & Field (Canadian silver-medallist) teams receiving national honours from both. He was also euphonium player in the UWO Symphonic Band. In his spare time Nick enjoys playing soccer (semi-professionally), travelling abroad, watching movies, surfing the web and eating Bar-B-Q with his family.
